13. No More Trouble
âAfter Auburey got fifteen days,â Mrs. Pollard told me, âhe never got in no more trouble. He said, âMomma, I can walk over things now.â Said, âMomma, I donât want to get in no more trouble, I ainât about to go out there no more.â Whatever they did to him out there, he never did want to go back no more. He didnât bother Mr. Sunday no more, he didnât bother no teacher, ainât bothered a soul since.â
14. Little Brother, Donât Do That Way
Robert, the youngest Pollard boy, seemed to be getting in trouble a lot. Once a fur hat was stolen from a J. L. Hudson truck, and the police suspected Robert.
âI remember when the policemen came to the house,â Thelma told me, âand they came in and searched the house, without a search warrant, too. They just came on in, there was about three or four cars, looked like somebody had really stole something, or somebodyâd been murdered, you know. But I donât know, Robert, he didnât take nothing off none of them, you know. Theyâd tell him to shut up, and heâd say, âI donât have to shut up in my own house.âââ
âRobert shouted at the policemen,â Mrs. Pollard said, âââYou donât talk to me that way in this house. This is my house. Donât you come in here swearing and yooping and yelling around. This is my house. You have no right in here without a warrant. Hit the door! Get out! I tell you, man, hit the door.âââ
âSo,â Thelma said, âthey was getting ready to hit Robert, and Auburey ran down the steps like a light. He was going to beat them up if they hit Robert. Aubureyâd been nice enough to let them in the house. But the policemen didnât really search around much, because there was two white policemen, and they had known Auburey and Robert and me, and they came downstairs and said they had searched, but they hadnât really. They were pretty good friends. But the hat wasnât anywhere anyway.â
âAfter the police left,â Mrs. Pollard told me, âAuburey, he said, âLittle brother, donât do that way.â He said, âYou shouldnât ought to do no policeman that way.âââ
